The Humane Society for the city of Dayton Ohio donated property for a new humane society building called Neglect Barn. The contractors where aware the site was on old landfill, so soil borings were performed. The borings went to a depth of 20’ and what was thought to be good soil was found.
The building was being constructed and two courses of brick had been installed on the grade beam. That night a heavy rain occurred and the next day is was found that the back of the building had settled approximately 3”.
New borings were performed to find that the soil thought to be good was an 8’ thick cap over another landfill.
Foundation Services was contacted to stabilize and lift the structure. Performance Piers is the supplier for Foundation Services and was contacted to assist with the design of the repair plan.
After reviewing the plans, loads and soil information a design to stagger the piles inside and outside of the foundation was provided. The contractor accepted the proposal and Performance Piers along with Case Engineering provided a sub- mittal package for the plan of repair.
The project consisted of (22) retrofit piles ranging from depths of 12’ – 40’. This was consistent with the rock layers found during the borings. After all the piles had been installed the grade beam was then lifted the 3” to as close to original elevation as possible.
